While mom and I waited for our flight last week,
we watched as a young woman
waited eagerly for her lover to return home.
She wore a darling dress,
with high heals and curled hair.
She held a sign for him.
And as he walked through that jetway,
the United agent welcomed him home
over the loud speaker, as everyone clapped.
Tears filled my eyes.
Thank you, soldiers.
For the time you spend away from your loved ones,
putting yourselves in harms way for us.
Eternal gratitude.
I listen to DSC every morning as I drive to work. I get the news, the sports scores, and I laugh hysterically at their vibrant personalities and comedy clips.
This morning it was different.
A young 23 year-old girl named Lee called in for help. DSC is by no means Dr. Laura and my experience is that they do not carry the Dr. Laura-type audience either.
Lee has been a new mother for 5 days. She was never pregnant and didn't even adopt. The baby just sort of happened upon her. Through a series of unfortunate events. Lee's sister and brother-in-law recently joined the military together and were both sent off pretty shortly after finishing boot camp. They both died last month, leaving their five month old daughter, Marie, to the baby's grandma. And then last week, the grandma passed away as well.
Marie has practically fallen into Lee's lap. Lee was by no means prepared for this and is really struggling to figure out how to handle not only the deaths, but also her new little bundle [of joy.]
Within minutes of Lee coming on the radio, countless callers rang in to offer their help: Cribs. Costco Membership. Clothes. A Babies-R-Us shopping spree. The overwhelming response made it a little tricky for me to see the road through my watery eyes.
My heart was so full of smiles as I listened to all these people jump at the chance to help this young girl. The little DSC community really pulled through. Now there's just one more reason to listen in the morning.
